“Aguila surrenders Kinsale to Mountjoy” took place during the Nine Years’ War in Ireland, specifically during the Battle of Kinsale in 1601.
Don Juan del Águila, a Spanish commander, had been sent by King Philip III of Spain to support the Irish rebels in their fight against English rule. Kinsale, a town in County Cork, Ireland, was a key strategic location during this conflict. The English forces, under the command of Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy, laid siege to Kinsale. After a prolonged and challenging siege, Don Juan del Águila eventually surrendered Kinsale to Lord Mountjoy in January 1602.
